BTN Preflop Squeeze Wet
Button player makes a large raise preflop after multiple players have limped into the pot wet pot, an aggressive strategy to force players with weak ranges to fold or be put in disadvantageous situations.
Overview
BTN Preflop Squeeze Wet is an aggressive preflop play specifically executed by the player on the button (BTN) when the pot already contains multiple limpers (i.e., a wet pot). It involves a large raise (typically 4-5 times the pot or more) to generate fold pressure. The term combines "Squeeze" and "Wet," emphasizing the large pot size and the weak ranges of the callers.
Core Principles
- Wet Pot Characteristics: Multiple players limp or cold-call into the pot, inflating it, but the callers' ranges are often weak (e.g., small pairs, suited connectors), lacking strong made hands.
- Squeeze Motivation: The button is the last to act preflop, making it the ideal position for a squeeze. A large raise forces callers to face poor pot odds and reverse implied odds, especially making it difficult for players in middle position to continue with marginal hands.
- Range Advantage: The squeezer typically represents a strong hand (e.g., AA, KK), but the actual range can include bluff hands (e.g., ATo, small suited connectors). When the callers in a wet pot have a high fold frequency, the squeeze itself is +EV.
Conditions for Execution
- Opponent Tendencies: Callers should be players who fold easily postflop or whose ranges are noticeably weaker than a standard raising range.
- Pot Size: The pot should contain at least 8-12 big blinds; otherwise, the fold equity from the squeeze is not significant.
- Position and Image: The button is ideal, and the squeeze is more likely to succeed if the player has a tight image.
Typical Example
Assume blinds 5/10, UTG limps, CO limps, pot is 25. Button holds A♦9♠ and raises to 55. UTG and CO fold most of the time, and the button wins the pot outright. If someone calls, the button can use position and moderate hand strength to make a continuation bet postflop.
Notes
- Wet pot squeezes should not be overused against all opponents; frequent folders will quickly adjust.
- Against calling stations or aggressive postflop players, a squeeze can lead to complex situations.
- Ranges must be balanced; avoid always squeezing with junk, as that invites counterplay.
