BTN Probe Bet

BTN Probe Bet

Term: 按钮位探注 BTN Probe Bet A bet made on the turn by the button player after calling a flop bet, when the preflop raiser usually in early position checks.

Overview

A Button Probe Bet (BTN Probe Bet) is a specific betting strategy in Texas Hold'em. It typically occurs when the preflop raiser (the aggressive initiator) is in a disadvantaged position (e.g., small blind or big blind), and the button player called the preflop raiser's continuation bet on the flop. On the turn, if the preflop raiser checks, the button player initiates a bet.

Applicable Scenarios

  • The preflop raiser is usually an early-position player (e.g., UTG, middle position) or a blind player, while the button player is merely a caller.
  • On the flop, the preflop raiser bets (a continuation bet), and the button player calls.
  • On the turn, the preflop raiser checks (possibly due to fear of draws or because the turn improved the opponent's range), and the button player then bets.

Strategic Objectives

  • Testing Hand Strength: The button player uses a small bet to test whether the preflop raiser has truly given up on the pot or is merely attempting a check-raise.
  • Taking Down the Pot: If the preflop raiser does not have a strong hand, the probe bet can force a fold, especially when the turn does not benefit the opponent's range.
  • Value Bet: When the button player has made a good hand on the flop and the turn is a safe card, the probe bet can thin the value.

Considerations

  • Probe bets are usually small (about 1/3 pot or less) to minimize risk.
  • The button's probe bet is vulnerable to check-raises from the preflop raiser, so timing must be chosen carefully to avoid aggressive opponents.
  • The preflop raiser's range, the frequency of their flop continuation bets, and the effect of the turn card on both players' ranges are key factors in determining whether the probe bet is profitable.

Typical Example

Preflop: UTG raises to 3BB, button calls, all others fold. Flop: UTG bets 4BB (continuation bet), button calls. Turn: UTG checks, button bets 6BB (probe bet). In this example, the button uses the probe bet to try to make UTG fold a missed hand.
