What is a BTN River C-Bet?

A BTN River C-Bet refers to a bet made on the river by the player on the button (BTN) who was the preflop aggressor, typically the raiser. It is a subset of continuation bets (c-bets), which are bets made on any street by the player who showed aggression on the previous street. Here, the c-bet occurs on the final street, and the player is in position (acting last).

Why is it distinct?

The river is the most information-rich street. By the time the river is dealt, the hand range of opponents is often narrowed significantly. The BTN, having position, can observe all actions before deciding. A river c-bet by the BTN can be polarized (strong value or bluffs) or merged (thin value), depending on board texture and opponent tendencies.

Strategic Considerations

• Board Texture: On boards that complete draws (e.g., flush or straight possibilities), the BTN's river c-bet often represents having the nuts or a bluff. On dry boards, it may be thin value.
• Opponent's Range: If the opponent called flop and turn, they likely have a made hand or a strong draw. The BTN must assess whether their hand beats enough calling ranges.
• Range Advantage: The BTN often has a range advantage from preflop, but river play depends on how the board developed. If the board favors the caller's range (e.g., a set-miner hitting trips), the BTN should be cautious.
• Bet Sizing: River c-bets can be large (over 75% pot) to pressure, or small (around 50%) to induce calls from weak hands. Overbets are also used for maximum value or to represent the nuts.

Example Scenario

6-max cash game, blinds $1/$2. Hero (BTN) raises to $6 with A♠ K♥ (AKo). BB calls. Flop ($13): K♠ 7♦ 2♣. Hero bets $9 (flop c-bet). BB calls. Turn ($31): 8♦. Hero bets $22 (turn c-bet). BB calls. River ($75): 3♣. Hero bets $50 (BTN river c-bet). This is a value bet with top pair top kicker, intending to get called by worse Kx or pocket pairs.

When Not to C-Bet on River

• Against opponents who float flop/turn and bluff river.
• On boards that hit the opponent's range hard (e.g., possible straight or flush when hero has a mid-pair).
• When the opponent's range is capped (weak) but they are likely to fold to any bet – in that case, checking may induce a bluff.
