Applicable Scenario
This strategy is commonly seen when both players check the flop, also check the turn, and then the button (BTN) takes the lead with a bet on the river. A dry river board means the board structure makes it difficult to have a draw, for example:
- Rainbow board with no straight possibility (e.g., A♠ 7♦ 2♣ 9♥ 3♠)
- Paired board (e.g., K♥ K♠ 4♦ 4♣ 2♠)
Strategy Rationale
- Represents a strong hand: On a dry board, opponents are unlikely to have straights or flushes. Therefore, a delayed continuation bet can represent top pair or better (e.g., top pair, top kicker, or even a set).
- Exploits fold equity: If opponents hold medium-strength hands (e.g., middle pair, bottom pair) or marginal showdown value, they tend to fold when facing a large bet on a dry board.
- Position advantage: The button has the last action on the river and can infer from opponents' checks that their hand strength is weak.
Bet Sizing and Frequency
- Typical bet: Usually 50%–75% of the pot to maximize fold equity.
- Frequency: Should not be used too often, otherwise sharp opponents will call down your bluffs. It is recommended to balance your range and occasionally make the same bet with value hands (e.g., top pair with top kicker).
Notes
- On a dry board, opponents are more likely to hold pocket pairs or ace-high hands. Be cautious if opponents have a wide calling range.
- This strategy becomes ineffective if opponents show resistance on the flop or turn (e.g., by raising).

Differences from Similar Terms

- Dry board c-bet (Dry Board C-Bet): A direct bet on the flop rather than a delayed one.
- BTN river value bet: A bet made with a strong hand to extract value, distinct from a bluffing delayed continuation bet.
