Poker Term

按钮位单花河牌先开(BTN River Open Monotone)

On a monotone board three or four cards of the same suit on the river, the button player opens the betting.

Overview

"BTN River Open Monotone" describes the action of a player on the button (BTN) voluntarily betting on a monotone river when no other player has bet before them. This term focuses on the opening range and strategy of the button on the river in a specific board structure (three or four suited cards).

Strategy Implications

  • Range Advantage: The button typically has a wider range on the flop, containing more suited combos (e.g., suited Aces, backdoor flush draws). When the board runs out monotone, the button may hold made flushes or the nut flush, while the blinds have a tighter range with fewer flush combos.
  • Betting Purposes:
    • Value Bet: When the button holds a strong flush or full house, they bet to extract value.
    • Bluff: Using the monotone board, the button can attack the blinds' weak range with hands that did not complete the flush (e.g., top pair no flush), forcing opponents to fold medium-strength pairs or draws.
  • Size Selection: Typically uses a large size (e.g., 2/3 pot or larger) to maximize value or increase fold equity. Small sizes may allow opponents to call or raise with flushes.

Examples

  • Board: Q♠ J♠ T♠ (flop) → 4♠ (turn) → 2♠ (river)
  • Action: Button holds A♠ K♦, completing the nut flush on the river. BTN bets 80% pot, aiming to get value from weaker flushes or full houses opponents may hold.
  • Bluff Example: Button holds K♦ J♥ (no flush). On a monotone river, BTN bets to force out opponents' Ace-high or small/medium pairs.

Notes

  • Opponent Range: Blinds may have raised with flush draws on the turn, so by the river their range contains fewer flushes. However, if the blinds are tight-aggressive, their river range may be more concentrated in flushes or full houses.
  • Frequency: The button should not open too frequently, otherwise opponents will adjust. In typical GTO strategies, the button mixes value bets and bluffs on monotone rivers to maintain balance.
