BTN Squeeze Pot River Strategy
BTN Squeeze Pot River Strategy
Term: BTN Squeeze Pot River Strategy Refers to a player's betting and value range adjustment strategy upon entering the river after executing a pre-flop squeeze from the button position.
Strategy Background
The BTN Squeeze Pot River Strategy is a poker river play tailored to a specific preflop action — a squeeze from the button position. When a player on the button squeezes (i.e., check-raises or raises directly, usually with a larger size) against one or more callers, the pot becomes larger and the player represents a strong range. Entering the river, the player's range must be adjusted based on board texture, opponent tendencies, and their own image.
Core Principles
- Range Polarization: The squeezer's preflop range is typically polarized, containing both strong hands (e.g., AA, KK) and some bluffs (e.g., small pairs, suited connectors). This polarization should be maintained on the river: value bet with strong hands, and check-fold or continue bluffing with unimproved bluffs (depending on opponent fold frequency).
- Bet Sizing: Since the pot is already inflated, river bets typically range from 2/3 to 1.2 times the pot, aiming to maximize value and apply pressure.
- Position Advantage: The button has the last action on the river. This advantage can be used to value bet or bluff when opponents check, and to decide whether to call, raise, or fold based on hand strength when opponents bet.
Common Scenarios
- After C-betting on the Flop and Turn: If the squeezer continued betting on the flop and turn, a river bet must balance value and bluffs. For example, when the board shows straight or flush possibilities, value bet with made hands and attempt bluffs with failed draws.
- After Checking the Flop: If the squeezer checked the flop, the river options include checking or betting. Checking aims to balance the range or control the pot; betting typically represents a strong hand.
- Multiway Pot: If multiple players enter the river after a squeeze, the strategy should be more conservative, as opponents' ranges are wider and bluff success rates decrease.
Notes
- Avoid over-bluffing: The success of the bluff portion of the squeezer's range on the river depends on opponents' fold frequency; adjust based on opponents.
- Utilize blockers: If your hand contains important blockers (e.g., key cards for top pair or draws), it can improve the efficiency of either bluffs or value bets.
