CO 200bb Steal

Background

CO 200bb Steal describes a preflop blind-stealing strategy from the cutoff position in deep-stacked situations (around 200bb). In deep stack scenarios, players have greater implied odds and more room to maneuver, but the risk of stealing increases as opponents' calls or reraises can lead to large pots.

Strategic Considerations

  • Position Advantage: The CO is a strong position, sitting before the button, allowing observation of all opponents except the button. When stealing blinds, if later players (button, small blind, big blind) fold, the pot is won outright.
  • Range Selection: In deep stack situations, the stealing range should be more cautious, typically selecting playable hands (e.g., pairs, connectors, suited connectors) to avoid investing too many chips in unfavorable spots. A typical stealing range includes about 25%-35% of hands, adjusted based on opponent tendencies.
  • Stack Depth Impact: With 200bb deep stacks, opponents' calling ranges postflop may be wider, as they hope to hit big hands for substantial returns. The stealer must have a sufficiently strong range to combat potential showdowns or reraises.
  • Opponent Adjustments: Consider the defending tendencies of the blinds. If the blinds frequently 3-bet or cold-call, tighten the stealing range; if they are passive, one can be more aggressive.

Risks and Rewards

Successful stealing yields a risk-free gain of 1.5bb (small blind + big blind). However, if called or reraised, the stealer may face unfavorable postflop situations. In deep stacked scenarios, re-stealing (re-steal) is costly, so stealers should avoid marginal hands.

Typical Scenario Example

Assume blinds are 1/2, the CO player has 400 chips (200bb), and all earlier positions fold. The CO may consider raising to 3-4bb with hands like AJo, KQo, 77+, and suited connectors such as 65s. If the button or blinds reraise, the CO must decide whether to continue based on pot odds and opponent tendencies.
