CO Heads-Up Pot River Strategy
CO Heads-Up Pot River Strategy
CO Heads-Up Pot River Strategy A general strategic framework for making decisions such as betting, check-folding, or check-raising on the river when entering a pot with a single opponent after raising from the CO position preflop.
Strategy Background
The CO Heads-Up Pot River Strategy applies when the CO (Cutoff) raises preflop and only one player calls (typically a blind or the BTN), creating a heads-up pot. At this point, both ranges are wide. The CO has positional advantage (if the opponent is in the blinds) or is out of position (if the opponent is on the BTN). River decisions need to integrate opponent range, board texture, and pot size.
Core Principles
- Value Bet: When the CO holds a strong hand (e.g., top pair top kicker or better) and believes the opponent may call, bet for value. Bet sizing is usually 50%-75% of the pot; the wetter the board, the higher the percentage.
- Bluff: Exploit opponent range that contains hand-catchers (e.g., top pair weak kicker, middle pair). Suitable bluffing hands include missed draws (e.g., straight draws, missed flush draws) and pairs with weak board connection. Bluff sizing is typically larger (75%-100% of the pot) to maximize fold equity.
- Check Range: Includes medium-strength hands (e.g., top pair weak kicker, middle pair) and hands with showdown value (e.g., bottom pair, Ace-high). After checking, if the opponent bets, decide to call or fold based on pot odds and opponent tendencies.
- Check-Raise: Applicable for nutted hands or as a mix with bluffs, but only used when the opponent bets frequently.
Strategy Adjustment Factors
- Opponent Type: Against loose-aggressive opponents, increase check-raise frequency; against tight-passive opponents, bet more for value.
- Board Texture: On dry boards (e.g., no flush or straight draws), opponent drawing possibilities are low, so small value bets are fine. On wet boards, be more cautious to avoid being raised.
- Position: When the CO has position, they can control the pot more flexibly; when out of position, play more conservatively to avoid getting into trouble after a raise.
Example
- Scenario: CO raises, BTN calls. Flop K♠9♦3♣, CO bets, BTN calls. Turn 5♥, CO checks, BTN checks. River 2♣ (dry board). CO holds A♠K♣ (TPTK): Bet 75% pot for value. Holds A♥Q♥ (missed draw): Check, then fold or bluff if opponent bets. Holds 8♦7♦ (missed gutshot): Can bluff bet 80% pot, representing a K pair or overpair.
