CO Preflop Multiway Pot

CO Preflop Multiway Pot

Term: CO Preflop Multiway Pot Refers to a situation where a player is in the cutoff CO and multiple players usually at least 3 have entered the pot preflop.

CO Preflop Multiway Pot

Overview

CO (Cut Off) is the position immediately to the right of the button, typically considered a middle-late position with a relatively high positional advantage. When the CO faces a multiway pot (i.e., two or more players have limped or raised preflop), the strategy needs to be significantly adjusted.

Position Characteristics

  • After the flop, the CO can observe the actions of all players except the button, giving it a good relative position.
  • However, in a multiway pot, players behind (the button and the big blind) may still act, so raising requires caution.

Preflop Range Adjustments

  • In a multiway pot, pot odds improve, but opponents' ranges are wider. Therefore, the CO's preflop range should lean toward strong value hands (e.g., high pairs, big high cards) and hands with multiway potential such as suited connectors.
  • Pure bluff hands (e.g., low pairs, offsuit connectors) should be used less frequently, as the call rate is higher in multiway pots, reducing bluff success.
  • Generally, the CO's open-raising range is wider in heads-up pots but should be tightened to about 15%-20% of starting hands in multiway pots.

Postflop Strategy Key Points

  • After the flop, the CO is sensitive to the flop texture (e.g., whether the board is wet or dry). In multiway pots, the value of made hands is significantly higher, so hands like top pair or better can be bet aggressively.
  • Drawing hands require caution: in multiway pots, implied odds improve, but opponents are more likely to hold cards that conflict with draws. Therefore, semi-bluffs should be reserved for strong draws (e.g., combo draws with both flush and straight possibilities).
  • When facing a lead bet or a re-raise, the CO must consider the strong range opponents may hold in a multiway pot, avoiding overplaying marginal hands.

Example

Typical situation: CO holds A♠K♠. Preflop, two players limp in front. CO raises to 4BB. The button folds, and the big blind calls, creating a four-player pot. Flop: J♠8♣2♥. CO continuation bets, representing an overpair or high cards.

Summary

In multiway pots, the CO must balance positional advantage with the complexity of multiway action. By tightening the preflop range, emphasizing the value of made hands postflop, and handling draws carefully, the CO can maximize long-term profitability.
