Donk Bet from BB

After the flop, the big blind player, who is originally out of position, makes a bet into the preflop raiser without having taken the initiative.

Overview

Donk Bet from BB (Big Blind) is an unconventional betting strategy in Texas Hold'em, specifically referring to a player who called a preflop raise from the big blind and then, on the flop, bets directly into the preflop raiser without going through the check-raise process. The term "Donk" carries a derogatory connotation, literally meaning "donkey," implying that the play is generally considered unwise or amateurish, though it may become a reasonable strategy in certain situations.

Typical Situation

In a hand, suppose Player A raised preflop from the button, and the Big Blind called. After the flop, it is standard for the preflop raiser (A) to act first (because they had position preflop). If the Big Blind player bets directly, this constitutes a Donk Bet. This bet is unconventional because the Big Blind player neither has position nor has seized the initiative through a check-raise.

Strategic Considerations

Traditional poker theory holds that players out of position should tend to check, to observe their opponent's reaction and avoid building the pot without information. A Donk Bet often reveals hand strength and can be exploited by opponents (e.g., raising or calling and applying pressure afterward). However, in certain specific situations, it may have value:

  • Protecting vulnerable but leading hands, preventing the opponent from seeing the next card for free.
  • Exploiting an opponent's tendency to have a wide preflop raising range, extracting value from weak hands.
  • On dry board textures, discouraging the opponent from continuation betting with air.
  • As part of a balanced strategy, mixing strong hands and bluffs.

Modern Trends

In high-level play, the frequency of Donk Bet usage has increased, especially against aggressive preflop raisers. Some strong players incorporate it into their arsenal to disrupt an opponent's continuation betting strategy. Overall, however, it remains a non-standard play that requires careful use, and beginners should avoid overusing it.
