Fish Table

Fish Table

Term: 鱼桌 Fish Table Refers to a poker table where players are generally low-skilled, weak in technique, and prone to making mistakes.

Overview

A Fish Table is a poker slang term describing a table where most players (referred to as "fish") lack basic strategy, bet randomly, call too often, or bluff improperly. Such tables are typically seen as profit opportunities, and high-level players ("sharks") actively seek to join them.

Identifying Features

Common characteristics of a fish table include:

  • High VPIP (voluntarily putting money in pot), playing too many starting hands
  • Passive calling (check-call) rather than raising
  • Insensitivity to position, pot odds, and other concepts
  • Going on tilt after losing and playing at higher stakes
  • Post-flop play that is too straightforward and easy to read

Strategic Value

On a fish table, the core strategy is to play tight-aggressive (TAG) and make value bets. Avoid complex bluffs, as fish may call down with weak hands. Exploit position advantage and apply pressure to weak ranges. At the same time, stay adaptable, as a fish table may also hide intermediate-level players.

Important Notes

Fish tables are not permanent; players may learn or leave. Due to the rake structure in online poker, even on a fish table, high rake can limit profitability. After identifying a fish table, stay focused and avoid making mistakes out of overconfidence.
