按钮位飘浮(Float from BTN)

Float from BTN

Button position player calls on the flop with an unmade hand, intending to steal the pot on later streets using positional advantage.

Term Explanation

Float from BTN is a common flop strategy where the player on the button (BTN) calls an opponent's flop bet with a hand that usually does not have a strong made hand but may have a draw or a backdoor draw. The main goal is to take down the pot on the turn or river by betting when the opponent shows weakness (e.g., checks), or to force the opponent to fold.

Applicable Scenarios

  • The opponent makes a continuation bet (C-bet) on the flop but has a wide range, and the flop structure favors the button (e.g., a dry flop).
  • The button holds a backdoor flush or straight draw, or a hand with some showdown value like bottom pair.
  • The opponent is a tight-aggressive player who might give up on unimproved hands on the turn.

Execution and Principles

  1. Peel the flop: Instead of raising, call to keep the pot small while giving the opponent the impression that you might have a medium-strength hand (e.g., top pair, a draw).
  2. Turn action: About 70% of the time, the flop bettor will check the turn. At that point, the button can bet about half to two-thirds of the pot, representing that they either improved on the turn or have a strong hand.
  3. River continuation: If called on the turn, consider betting again on the river, but adjust based on board changes and opponent tendencies.

Caveats

  • Do not use this strategy too frequently; otherwise, opponents will counter with check-raises or anti-float plays.
  • Avoid using it in multiway pots, as the likelihood of multiple callers is higher, reducing the success rate of a float.
  • Assess the opponent's fold equity; this strategy works poorly against calling stations.

Example

A typical scenario: On a dry flop of K♠7♥2♦, the opponent bets. The button calls with A♦4♦ (a backdoor flush draw). The turn is 8♥, the opponent checks, the button bets half-pot, and the opponent folds.
