Fold to 3-Bet from UTG+1
In No-Limit Texas Hold'em, refers to the probability or action of a player folding when facing a 3-bet after having opened with a raise from the UTG+1 position.
Overview
"Fold to 3-Bet from UTG+1" is a metric that measures a player's defensive tendency when facing a 3-bet from a specific position (UTG+1). UTG+1 (Under the Gun +1) is the second earliest position in the preflop action order and typically represents a strong starting hand range. When a player in this position open-raises, subsequent players (BTN, CO, etc.) or the blinds may 3-bet with either a wider or narrower range of hands.
Strategic Significance
- Defense and Exploitation: The appropriate "Fold to 3-Bet" frequency depends on the opponent's 3-bet range. If the opponent's 3-bet range is tight (only QQ+, AK), the UTG+1 player can continue with KK+ or AK. If the opponent's range is wide, the defending frequency should increase, continuing with TT+, AQ+ or 4-betting.
- Range Balancing: To avoid being easily exploited by opponents, the UTG+1 player needs to maintain an appropriate fold rate. A fold rate of around 50%-60% is generally recommended (depending on the opponent's 3-bet frequency) to prevent being frequently 3-bet and stolen from.
- Positional Disadvantage: UTG+1 is at a disadvantage postflop (especially when the button 3-bets), so when facing a 3-bet, players tend to fold or 4-bet all-in to avoid complex postflop situations.
Influencing Factors
- Opponent Type: Tight-aggressive players (TAG) have more reliable 3-bet ranges, so the fold rate should be lower. Loose-aggressive players (LAG) have wide 3-bet ranges, so calling or 4-betting is more appropriate.
- Stack Depth: With shallow stacks (<30 BB), the fold rate decreases, and common actions are all-in or fold. With deep stacks (>100 BB), calling becomes more playable, and the fold rate can be slightly higher.
- Open-Raise Range: If the UTG+1 player's open-raise range is wide (e.g., including suited connectors), the fold rate to a 3-bet will naturally increase. Conversely, if only strong hands are opened, the fold rate decreases.
Typical Scenario
For example, in a 9-handed game, the UTG+1 player opens to 3 BB with AJo, and the BTN (button) player 3-bets to 10 BB. At this point, the UTG+1 player should consider the opponent's 3-bet tendency: if the opponent rarely 3-bets, fold; if the opponent frequently 3-bets, either 4-bet or call. In GTO strategy, when UTG+1 faces a 3-bet from BTN, the calling range typically includes TT-AA, AK, AQ, while folding weaker hands like ATo, KQo, etc.
Data Reference
(Note: The following is a teaching example and not actual data.) In a typical balanced strategy, UTG+1's fold rate when facing a 3-bet from UTG (non-actual position, just for illustration) is about 55%; when facing a 3-bet from BTN, the fold rate is about 60%. Actual values should be adjusted based on table dynamics.
