Fold to Check-Raise from BB

Fold to Check-Raise from BB

Fold to Check-Raise from BB Refers to the frequency with which a player in the big blind folds when facing an opponent's check-raise on the flop or turn.

Overview

[Fold] to [Check-Raise from BB] is an important statistic that measures the Big Blind player's post-flop strategy. This data is typically calculated from hand histories using tracking software (such as Hold'em Manager or [PokerTracker]), reflecting the player's defensive tendencies in specific situations.

Calculation Method

This statistic tracks the following scenario:

  • The player is in the Big Blind (BB)
  • On a post-flop street (usually the flop or turn), the opponent checks first, then the player bets
  • The opponent then raises
  • The player folds — the percentage of times this occurs out of total such situations.

Formula: Fold to Check-Raise from BB = (Number of Folds) / (Number of Folds + Number of Calls + Number of Re-raises) × 100%

Strategic Significance

This data is used to analyze whether the Big Blind player folds too often or defends insufficiently. A high fold rate (e.g., over 60%) may indicate that the player is too weak against check-raises and is easily exploitable. A low fold rate (e.g., below 30%) suggests the player tends to continue, but may call or raise with too wide a range.

Typical Range

  • Very Tight: > 70% — Likely exploitable by frequent check-raises
  • Tight: 55% – 70% — Relatively common, but still has leaks
  • Moderate: 40% – 54% — Balanced range
  • Loose: 25% – 39% — Aggressive defense, but may be beaten by value raises
  • Very Loose: < 25% — Rarely folds, may be frequently raised for value by opponents

Example Application

Suppose on the flop, the Big Blind player defends preflop with A♥9♥, and the flop comes K♦7♠2♣. The Big Blind checks, and the preflop raiser also checks. On the turn: 3♥, the Big Blind bets 2/3 pot, and the preflop raiser raises to 3x. If the Big Blind folds, this counts as one "Fold to Check-Raise"; if he calls or re-raises, it does not count.

Related Adjustments

Opponents can use this data to adjust their strategy: against a player with a high fold rate, they can increase their check-raise frequency to steal pots; against a player with a low fold rate, they should raise more often for value and reduce bluffs.
