Full House
In Texas Hold'em, it ranks fourth, behind only a straight flush and four of a kind. In practice, Full House is an extremely strong made hand that usually wins most pots, especially when hit on the flop or turn, making it difficult for opponents to overtake. However, one must be cautious of opponents possibly holding a larger Full House or a straight flush. For example, if your hole cards are K and K, and the board is K, Q, Q, 5, 2, you have Kings Full of Queens three Kings with a pair of Queens. In this case, unless an opponent has a higher three of a kind e.g., three Aces with a pair, you are essentially locked in for the win. A typical scenario is that when betting on the river, a Full House can often force opponents to fold or call, thereby maximizing value.
Hand Composition
A Full House consists of three cards of the same rank (three of a kind) and a pair of the same rank (pair), for example K♠ K♥ K♦ 7♣ 7♥. In Texas Hold'em, a full house is the fourth strongest hand, behind a straight flush, four of a kind, and royal flush.
Comparison Rules
When two or more players both have a full house, first compare the rank of the three of a kind; the higher rank wins. If the three of a kind are the same, then compare the rank of the pair. For example, K-K-K-7-7 beats Q-Q-Q-A-A because three Kings beat three Queens; K-K-K-7-7 beats K-K-K-5-5 because a pair of sevens beats a pair of fives.
Common Misunderstandings
- A full house is sometimes called "Mǎn Táng Cǎi" or "Mǎn Táng Hóng" in Chinese, but the standard Chinese term is "Hú Lú" (which directly translates "gourd").
- A full house is specifically three of a kind plus a pair; no other combination qualifies.
