Half Pot Bet

Meaning

A Half Pot Bet is a common bet size where the bet amount is 50% of the current pot. For example, when the pot is 100 chips, a half-pot bet is 50 chips.

Usage and Strategy

Half-pot bets are widely used in Texas Hold'em, often in the following scenarios:

  • Value Bet: When you have a strong hand but don't want to inflate the pot excessively, a half-pot bet extracts value while giving the opponent relatively reasonable pot odds to call.
  • Bluff: On the flop or turn, a half-pot bluff can control risk while applying some pressure.
  • Continuation Bet: The preflop raiser often uses a half-pot bet as a standard continuation bet size on the flop.

Compared to a pot-sized bet, a half-pot bet offers the opponent better pot odds (they need to call 1/3 of the pot instead of 1/2), so they are more likely to call. Half-pot bets are often used against loose-passive players or when balancing your range.

Mathematical Background

In a raked environment, a half-pot bet gives pot odds of 3:1 (the caller needs 25% equity), and the opponent needs at least 25% win rate to profitably call (ignoring implied odds). This size is commonly used to construct betting ranges that put opponent's bluff-catchers in tough decisions.

Notes

  • A half-pot bet is not always optimal; when you have a significant nut advantage, a larger size (e.g., 2/3 pot or full pot) may be better to extract value.
  • On the turn or river, a half-pot bet may convey too little information, so you should adjust based on opponent tendencies.
