Half-Pot Bet

半池下注

**Term: Half-Pot Bet** A half-pot bet refers to a bet size equal to half the current pot. In practice, it is often used to balance risk and value: on one hand, the bet size is moderate, avoiding overexposure of chips and preventing difficult situations when facing a raise; on the other hand, a half-pot bet forces opponents to call at poor odds. If an opponent holds a drawing hand, the expected value of their call is often negative, thus protecting your made hand. Typical scenario: On the flop, the pot is 100 chips. You hold top pair and bet 50 chips. This extracts value from weaker pairs or draws without giving opponents easy calls due to favorable odds. Meanwhile, if you face a raise, you can fold at a smaller cost.

Context: Term article: Half-Pot Bet

Overview

A half-pot bet refers to a bet where the amount wagered equals half of the current pot. For example, if the pot is 100 chips, a half-pot bet is 50 chips. This is a common bet size widely used post-flop (flop, turn, river).

Uses and Strategy

  • Value bet: When holding a strong hand (such as top pair, two pair, or better), a half-pot bet can encourage opponents to call with medium-strength hands while avoiding scaring them off. Compared to a full-pot bet, a half-pot bet offers the opponent better pot odds, thereby increasing the frequency of calls.
  • Bluff: A half-pot bet is also commonly used for bluffing because it forces opponents to fold at a lower cost. If the opponent's fold frequency is high enough, a half-pot bluff can be profitable.
  • Pot control: When holding a marginal hand (such as middle pair or a draw), a half-pot bet can control the size of the pot, avoiding committing too many chips in unfavorable situations.

Mathematical Principle

Pot odds calculation for a half-pot bet: If the opponent faces a half-pot bet, they need to call half the pot, and the pot will become 1.5 times the original pot. Therefore, the opponent's pot odds are (call amount / total pot after call) = (0.5P) / (1.5P) = 1/3, or approximately 33.3%. This means the opponent needs at least 33.3% equity to profitably call. Thus, a half-pot bet is often used to force opponents to fold hands with less than 33.3% equity.

Comparison with Other Bet Sizes

  • Small bet (e.g., 1/3 pot): More commonly used to induce calls or control the pot, but gives the opponent better odds.
  • Full-pot or overbet: Used to maximize value or apply maximum pressure, but carries higher risk.

The half-pot bet is often used for balancing value and bluffs and is one of the default bet sizes for many players.
