HJ Raise C-Bet
HJ Raise C-Bet
Term: HJ Raise C-Bet On the flop, a player in the HJ position raises an opponent's continuation bet.
Concept
HJ (Hijack) is located after the under-the-gun position and before the cutoff, usually a late position with certain blind-stealing and range advantages. When the HJ player raises preflop, an opponent calls, and on the flop the opponent bets first (i.e., continuation bet, C-Bet), if the HJ player chooses to raise, it is called HJ Raise C-Bet.
Purpose and Strategy
- Value Raise: When the HJ player holds a strong hand (such as top pair top kicker, two pair, set, etc.), they raise to build the pot while protecting made hands from draws.
- Bluff Raise: Using positional advantage and the preflop raiser's range advantage, they raise on dry or favorable flops to force opponents to fold. Common on flops that are unfavorable for the caller's range, such as high-card flops.
- Information Gathering: After raising, observing opponent reactions. If the opponent re-raises or shows action on the turn, it can help determine their hand strength.
Situational Considerations
- Opponent Type: Against aggressive opponents with high C-Bet frequency, raising can punish their over-bluffing; against tight-passive players, raising can force them to fold medium-strength hands.
- Flop Structure: Wet flops (e.g., connected, suited) are more suitable for value raises; dry flops (rainbow, unconnected) are easier for bluffs.
- Range Balance: Under GTO play, the HJ should mix value and bluff raises at appropriate frequencies in this scenario to avoid being exploited by opponents.
Notes
- Raise sizing is usually 2/3 to full pot. Too large may reveal hand strength, too small may not effectively force folds.
- Consider effective stack depth. With deep stacks, raising can build a bigger pot; with short stacks, be cautious to avoid being committed.
Example
Typical scenario: HJ raises with K♠Q♠, button calls. Flop K♦9♠3♥, button bets 1/2 pot. HJ raises to 3x, button folds.
