Poker Term

劫持位河牌干燥挤压(HJ River Squeeze Dry)

On the river, a player in the hijack position, facing bets from multiple opponents, makes a large raise, usually on a dry board, aiming to force opponents to fold.

Concept

HJ River Squeeze Dry is a relatively advanced poker strategy term that combines position, street, and board structure. "HJ" refers to the Hijack position, "River" indicates the river betting round, "Squeeze" refers to a squeezing raise (typically used in multiway pots to force intermediate players to fold, isolating a weak opponent), and "Dry" means a dry board (no flush or straight draws possible).

Usage Scenarios

This term is typically applied in multiway pots postflop where the river card creates a dry board texture (e.g., a rainbow board with no straight connectivity). Suppose multiple players called or bet on the flop and turn, then on the river the first player bets, followed by another player calling. At this point, the player in the HJ position can make a large raise (about 2–3 times the pot), intending to force both earlier players to fold and take the pot down directly. This play relies on reading opponents' ranges: on a dry board, opponents usually hold one pair or weak made hands that struggle to withstand a large raise.

Strategic Points

  • Requires a sufficiently high fold equity from opponents, and your own range must contain value hands (e.g., top pair or a set) for balance.
  • A dry board reduces the likelihood of opponents semibluffing, so the bluffing component of a squeeze raise must be carefully evaluated.
  • The term emphasizes "Dry"; if the board is wet (with draws possible), opponents may call with strong draws, reducing the squeeze's effectiveness.
  • Generally used only when in the HJ position and facing multiple opponents; in heads-up pots, it is less commonly referred to as a "Squeeze."

Example

Suppose preflop: UTG limps, HJ raises, BTN calls, big blind calls. Flop: K♥7♣2♦, everyone checks. Turn: 5♠, big blind bets half pot, UTG folds, HJ calls, BTN folds. River: 3♦, big blind bets one-third pot again, the HJ player makes a large raise (2.5 times the pot), and the big blind folds. In this example, HJ's raise is a typical HJ River Squeeze Dry.
