HJ Turn Iso Pot

HJ Turn Iso Pot

HJ Turn Iso Pot On the turn, a player in the Hijack position raises to isolate a specific opponent and contest the pot.

Overview

HJ Turn Iso Pot is a common aggressive play in Texas Hold'em that combines position (HJ), street (Turn), and action (Isolation Raise). The core objective is to isolate one main opponent by raising when one or more opponents have bet on the turn from the HJ position, forcing other players to fold, thereby playing heads-up in position against a specific opponent while contesting the current pot.

Use Cases

  • After a flop bet: Typically, someone bets on the flop, others call or fold, and on the turn the HJ player believes their hand is strong enough or they have a good draw suitable for isolation.
  • Against loose players: When the HJ player observes that an opponent has a wide post-flop betting range and is likely to fold under pressure, this strategy can be employed.
  • Holding a strong hand or strong draw: For example, top pair top kicker, two pair, straight flush draw, etc. Isolation increases win rate and pot equity.

Considerations

  • Position advantage: The HJ position still acts after the button or CO on the turn, but already has information advantage over earlier positions. However, be aware that later players (BTN, CO) may still have the right to raise.
  • Opponent tendencies: Avoid using this against players with extremely low post-flop fold rates, as isolation may be ineffective.
  • Pot size: The raise size should be reasonable, typically 2/3 to 1 times the current pot, to avoid overinflating the pot and worsening your own odds.

Typical Example

Assume a 6-handed table. HJ holds A♠K♠. Flop: K♦8♠3♣. HJ checks. BTN bets 60% of the pot. HJ calls. Turn: J♠. BTN bets 70% of the pot again. HJ raises to 3x, isolating BTN and forcing other draws or weak hands to fold.
