Inside Straight Draw

Overview

[Gutshot] (Inside Straight [Draw]), also known as a gutshot straight draw, is a type of draw in Texas Hold'em. A player's hand combined with the board is one specific card away from completing a straight. For example, with a hand of 8-9 and a board of 5-6-10, the player needs a 7 to make a straight (5-6-7-8-9 or 6-7-8-9-10), but only one 7 completes it from the middle.

Characteristics

• Low probability of completion: A [gutshot] has only 4 [outs], while an [open-ended straight draw] has 8 outs. On the flop, the probability of hitting a gutshot by the river is approximately 16.5% (about 5:1 odds).
• Deceptiveness: Since the made hand is not obvious, opponents are less likely to detect it, potentially yielding higher value once completed.
• [Implied odds]: Due to its deceptive nature, gutshots often have high [implied odds], making them suitable for chasing in deep-stack situations where opponents are likely to pay off.

Strategic Advice

• Position and odds: Consider calling when [in position] and with favorable [pot odds]. Generally, pot odds better than 5:1 are needed to be profitable, but implied odds can lower that requirement.
• [Semi-bluff]: A gutshot can be combined with other draws (e.g., backdoor flush) or a pair to be used as a [semi-bluff] raising tool.
• Avoid over-investment: Do not put too many chips into a bare gutshot (only 4 outs), especially in multi-way pots or against opponents showing strength.

Example

Flop is J-10-4, hand is 8-9. The player needs a Q to complete the straight (8-9-10-J-Q). This is a gutshot. If the turn is Q, the straight is made.
