Button Thin Value Line
Button Thin Value Line
Term: Button Thin Value Line A strategy of making a small value bet on the button against an opponent's weaker range to extract additional profit.
Concept
A thin value bet (Thin Value Bet) refers to a bet made when your hand is only slightly ahead of your opponent's calling range, with the intention of extracting value from worse hands. The button (Button) is the most advantageous position in Texas Hold'em, as the player acts last on all subsequent betting rounds. The button thin value line combines positional advantage with thin value betting technique, often used post-flop against opponents who tend to call.
Conditions for Implementation
- Marginal Hand Strength Advantage: Your hand can only beat most of your opponent's calling range, but may lose to a few strong hands in their raising range. For example, on a dry board with top pair weak kicker, expecting the opponent to call with second pair or a draw.
- Weak Opponent Range: The opponent shows a lack of strong hands on the flop or turn (e.g., a check-call pattern), and the river does not complete obvious draws.
- Position Advantage: The button allows you to observe your opponent's action first; if the opponent checks, you bet; if the opponent leads out, you choose to fold or call.
Bet Sizing
Thin value bets are usually small (about 30% to 50% of the pot) to induce weaker hands to call, while reducing losses if raised. For example, with a pot of 100, bet 30-40.
Considerations
- Overuse can be detected by opponents and countered (e.g., check-raise bluff).
- Avoid using when the opponent's range is polarized or when your hand is easily outdrawn.
- Must account for opponent tendencies: more effective against loose-passive players, careful against tight or aggressive players.
Typical Example
Flop K♣7♥2♦, button holds K♦9♠ bet. Turn 5♠, river 3♥. Opponent check-calls on both turn and river. In this situation, top pair weak kicker is likely ahead of the opponent's second pair or small pair, so you can bet about 1/3 pot for thin value.
