Hijack Continuation Bet Defense

Hijack Continuation Bet Defense

Term: Hijack Continuation Bet Defense The strategy and range adjustments for the hijack player's response to an opponent's attack when continuation betting on the flop after a preflop raise.

Concept

Hijack Continuation Bet Defense is a strategy in Texas Hold'em for responding to a player in the Hijack (HJ) position who has made a continuation bet (C-bet) on the flop. The player may face raises or calls from opponents, and this strategy focuses on protecting one's continuation bet range, avoiding excessive exploitation by opponents, while maintaining a balance between value and bluffs.

Application Scenarios

  • Preflop Action: Hijack players typically open-raise with a wider range because they are in a middle-late position with some control over subsequent actions.
  • Flop Continuation Bet: As the preflop raiser, the Hijack player often makes a continuation bet on the flop to extract value or force opponents to fold.
  • Defense Needs: When opponents (especially those in the blinds or in position) raise or call the continuation bet, the Hijack player needs to adjust their continuing range to avoid over-folding or over-calling.

Key Defense Strategy Points

  1. Range Splitting: Based on board texture and opponent tendencies, split the continuation bet range into value bets and bluff bets, and set fold thresholds for the bluff portion.
  2. Raise Defense: When facing a raise, continue with strong hands (e.g., top pair or better, drawing combos) and fold weak hands and air. Generally, the Hijack player will defend about 30-40% of their continuation bet range, depending on board structure and opponent sizing.
  3. Call Defense: When facing a call, the Hijack player needs to choose between checking or re-betting on the turn based on board changes, to avoid being exploited by opponents with positional advantage.
  4. Adjustment Factors: Opponent's fold rate, board wetness, and the Hijack player's image (tight or loose) all affect the defense frequency.

Notes

  • Although the Hijack position has some advantage, it is not as strong as the Button (BTN), so the defense range should not be too wide.
  • Avoid over-defending on rainbow dry boards, as this may allow opponents to exploit your continuation bets.
  • In practice, dynamically adjust based on opponent data (e.g., fold rate, raise frequency) rather than mechanically applying the strategy.
