Under the Gun Opening Range
Under the Gun Opening Range
Term: Under the Gun Opening Range In Texas Hold’em, the range of starting hands used by a player in the Under the Gun (UTG) position when making the first raise preflop.
Context: Term article: Under the Gun Opening Range
Overview
UTG (Under the Gun) is the first position in the preflop action order, located to the left of the small blind. Because this position is always at a disadvantage postflop (acting first, with the least information), the UTG opening range is typically very tight, consisting only of the strongest starting hands.
Typical Range
Generally, in a standard 6-max table (6-max), the UTG opening range accounts for about 10-15% of all starting hands; in a full ring (9 or 10-handed), it is even narrower, around 8-12%. Common hands include:
- All pairs: TT+ (often including 99 or 88, depending on strategy)
- All ace-high suited connectors: AKs, AQs, AJs, etc., but ATs and below are usually not in the range
- Big pairs: QQ, KK, AA are always included
- Some high card offsuit: AKo, AQo (sometimes AJo is included, but it's marginal)
Strategic Considerations
The UTG opening range must balance value and protection:
- Value: Raise with strong hands to build the pot, hoping to be called by weaker hands.
- Protection: Avoid marginal hands entering multiway pots, reducing the chance of being outdrawn.
- Positional Disadvantage: Without position postflop, medium-strength hands often get into trouble, so the range is mainly strong hands.
Actual ranges are affected by factors such as stack depth, opponent tendencies, and tournament stage (e.g., ICM pressure). For example, when deep stacked, the range can be slightly widened to include some speculative hands (e.g., small/medium pairs, suited connectors), while with short stacks, it tightens further to only premium hands.
