Isolation
Isolation
Context: Term: Isolation A strategy of raising or going all-in to force other players to fold, leaving only the target player heads-up, typically used when in a favorable position against a weak opponent.
Context: Term article: 隔离 (Isolation)
Overview
Isolation is a common and important tactic in Texas Hold'em, where a player raises or goes All-in in a specific situation to force intervening callers or blind-position players to fold, thereby entering a post-flop heads-up pot against only one specific opponent (usually a weaker player). The core objective is to reduce the number of opponents, increase hand equity, and maximize profit by leveraging position and skill advantages.
Execution Timing
- In Position: When on the button or cutoff, if there are limpers ahead with strong hands, an isolation raise can force the blinds to decide while isolating the limper.
- Against Weak Players: Targeting players with high fold rates or predictable post-flop play, isolation can quickly build pots and apply pressure.
- Squeeze Prelude: When facing multiple limpers, an isolation raise may provoke a squeeze, so raise sizing should be adjusted based on opponent tendencies.
Raise Sizing
A typical isolation raise is 3-5 times the big blind, or 1-2 big blinds more than a standard raise, to discourage other players from calling. If blind players are aggressive and prone to squeezing, increase sizing or go All-in (when short-stacked).
Risks and Balance
- Excessive Frequency: Easily exploited by sharp opponents who will re-raise (squeeze) to counter.
- Hand Selection: Using only strong hands (e.g., high pairs, Ace-high) becomes too transparent; mix in medium hands (e.g., suited connectors) to balance the range.
- Short Stack Situations: When the limper has an extremely short stack, isolation essentially becomes an all-in; pot odds must be calculated.
Advanced Applications
In late tournament stages, isolation can protect big stacks or pressure short stacks, adjusting ranges with ICM considerations. In cash games, post-flop playability is more emphasized.
