Blind Stealing

**Term: Blind Stealing** In Texas Hold'em, when a player is in late position and everyone before has folded, a raise is made to try to force the small and big blinds to fold, winning the pot directly.

Overview

Blind Stealing is a common aggressive strategy in Texas Hold'em, typically used when action folds to a late position (e.g., Button, Cutoff). The player leverages positional advantage by raising to pressure the blinds, hoping they fold, thus winning the dead money (blinds) without a flop.

Applicable Scenarios

Blind stealing is most effective in the following situations:

  • In late position: The Button (BTN) or Cutoff (CO) are the best positions for stealing, as the blinds are the only remaining opponents after the action.
  • Previous players have folded: Only the blinds have yet to act, and they are likely holding weak hands.
  • Opponents are tight-passive: If the blinds have a high Fold to Steal rate (often exceeding 70%), steal attempts are more successful.

Raise Sizing

The typical raise size for a blind steal is 2.5–3 times the big blind. A raise that is too small (e.g., 2x) may entice the blinds to call; too large hurts the risk-to-reward ratio. In deep stack situations, a slightly larger size can increase fold equity.

Hand Range

Blind stealing does not require strong hands. A wide range of hands can be raised, including:

  • Any two cards (very aggressive play)
  • Suited connectors, small pairs, weak Axe, and other speculative hands
  • Avoid stealing too frequently with junk, as it leaves you vulnerable to re-steals.

Risks and Responses

  • Re-steal: The blinds may fight back with a 3-bet using strong or medium hands. Based on opponent type, decide whether to fold or 4-bet.
  • Call: If a blind calls, the hand goes post-flop. You must continue applying pressure using your positional advantage and the flop texture.
  • Balance: The frequency of stealing should be balanced with value raises to prevent opponents from easily reading your strategy.

Summary

Blind stealing is an effective strategy to exploit blinds who fold too often, but it must be adapted based on opponent tendencies, stack depth, and your own table image. Over-aggressive stealing can lead to costly re-steals, so maintain a reasonable frequency.
