Term: Effective Stack Effective stack refers to the smallest stack among all players still in the hand, determining the maximum amount that can be wagered in that hand. In practice, effective stack is the core basis for evaluating preflop raise sizing, postflop betting strategies, and potential pot odds, because no player can act beyond this limit. For example, in a 1/2 game, Player A has $500 and Player B has only $50; the effective stack is $50. A cannot use his deep stack advantage to pressure B and must instead play a short-stack strategy, such as shoving preflop or pot-controlling postflop cautiously.
Concept
Effective Stack is a core concept in Texas Hold'em that measures the potential risk and reward in a hand. It does not refer to the total chips a player actually holds, but rather the minimum stack size among the players still in the hand. For example, on the flop, if Player A has 100 big blinds and Player B has 50 big blinds, the effective stack is 50 big blinds, because any action (such as raise or all-in) can only involve that 50 big blinds at most.
