Overview
SPR (Stack-to-Pot Ratio) is a key metric in Texas Hold'em for assessing post-flop decision risk, defined as the ratio of the current effective stack size (the smaller stack between the two players) to the pot size. For example, if the pot on the flop is 100 and the effective stack is 400, the SPR is 4.
Calculation and Significance
The formula for SPR is: SPR = Effective Stack / Pot. Generally, a lower SPR means the pot is larger relative to the stack, making players more inclined to go all-in with strong hands; a higher SPR means the pot is relatively small, giving players more room for multi-street betting and bluffing.
Strategic Application
- Low SPR (<4): Suitable for quickly going all-in with hands as strong as top pair or better, reducing opponents' drawing equity. For example, when SPR is 2 on the flop, top pair top kicker (TPTK) should typically be shoved directly.
- Medium SPR (4-10): Requires more caution, considering hand strength and opponent ranges. For example, with an SPR of 6, an overpair might be worth betting on the flop, but be wary of draws completing on the turn.
- High SPR (>10): Ideal for playing speculative hands (e.g., small pairs, suited connectors) due to high implied odds; at the same time, avoid committing too many chips with marginal hands.
Notes
SPR is a dynamic metric that should be adjusted based on board texture, opponent tendencies, and position. For example, on wet boards (e.g., straight or flush draws), even with a low SPR, be cautious about shoving, as opponents may hold strong draws. Additionally, SPR only considers effective stacks; in multi-way pots, calculate SPR separately for each opponent.
Typical Example
Suppose the pot on the flop is 200, and you and your opponent each have 1500 chips, giving an SPR of 7.5. With top pair top kicker, consider betting about 2/3 pot; if raised, evaluate whether to continue. If SPR is 2 (pot 200, stack 400), then shoving directly is more reasonable.
