UTG opening range

UTG opening range

Context: Term: UTG opening range The set of starting hand combinations that a player in the Under the Gun (UTG) position chooses when acting first before the flop.

Context: Term article: UTG Opening Range

Basic Concept

The UTG (Under the Gun) position is the first to act before the flop in a standard 9-handed full ring game (the first to act before the small blind). Because it has no positional advantage and many players act after it, the UTG opening range is typically the tightest.

Range Characteristics

  • High Tightness: Generally, the UTG opening range comprises about 15–20% of total hands, consisting only of strong hands.
  • Avoid Marginal Hands: Suited connectors, small pairs, and weak suited aces are usually excluded, as they are prone to re-raises or being in a multi-way pot out of position.
  • Variance Control: A tight range helps reduce post-flop complexity and eases decision pressure from being out of position.

Typical Range Example (9-handed, 100bb deep)

A common UTG opening range includes:

  • All pocket pairs (usually starting from 77+ or 88+, depending on playing style)
  • All ace-high hands (ATo+, A9s+)
  • Some king-high hands (KQo+, KTs+)
  • Some queen-high hands (QJs+)
  • Suited connectors like JTs, T9s are occasionally added based on dynamics.

The total number of combinations is around 120–150 (about 15% of total hands). Note that different player styles and stack depths can lead to slight adjustments.

Strategic Considerations

  • Positional disadvantage is the core factor determining the range: UTG is out of position post-flop, so strong hands are needed.
  • Consider re-raises: If the table is loose, tighten up more to avoid frequent 3-bets; if the table is tight, the range can be slightly widened.
  • Balance: To avoid exploitation, top players mix in some medium hands like small to medium pairs, but overall the range remains tight.

Summary

The UTG opening range is one of the most conservative pre-flop opening ranges, emphasizing hand strength and positional awareness. Understanding and correctly executing this range is fundamental to building a solid pre-flop strategy.
