枪口位开池范围(UTG Opening Range)

UTG Opening Range

In a full ring (usually 9 or 10 players), the hand range selected by the player in the under the gun position (first position to the left of the big blind) when they first raise.

Overview

UTG (Under the Gun, abbreviated as UTG) is the most disadvantageous initial position in Texas Hold'em, because this player acts first preflop with several players still to act behind. Therefore, the opening range from UTG is typically tightened to include only the strongest starting hands.

Typical Range

Generally, in a standard 9-handed full ring game, the UTG opening range comprises about 10%-15% of all hands. Common hands include:

  • Pairs: 77+ (usually 99+ more common, depending on playing style)
  • Suited connectors: Usually do not include low suited connectors, but some players add AQs, KQs, etc.
  • Big broadways: AKo, AQo (some players exclude AQo)
  • Specific combos: ATs+, KJs+, QJs, etc.

Strategy Adjustments

The actual range should be adjusted based on table dynamics:

  • Soft table: Can widen the range slightly, adding more speculative hands.
  • Tight-aggressive table: Should be stricter to avoid being difficult to play after a raise.
  • Stack depth: With deep stacks, can add more suited connectors; with short stacks, mainly play big hands.

Common Mistakes

  • Do not play too many marginal hands: Playing too frequently from UTG can be exploited by opponents.
  • Avoid limp-calling with small pairs: Small pairs are only profitable when hitting a set, but calling from UTG can easily be squeezed by later players.
