Light 3-Bet Leak

Light 3-Bet Leak

A light 3-bet leak is a strategic error where a player frequently three-bets with weak or marginal hands in suboptimal situations, leading to predictable patterns and exploitable behavior.

What is a Light 3-Bet Leak?

A light 3-bet leak occurs when a player three-bets (reraise a raise) with a wider range than is optimal, often including hands that are too weak or poorly suited to the situation. This leak is common among aggressive players who overestimate their post-flop edge or misapply advanced concepts like polarized 3-betting.

Why It's a Leak

The primary issue with a light 3-bet leak is that it makes a player's 3-betting range transparent and exploitable. Opponents can adjust by calling more often with strong hands (to trap) or 4-betting aggressively, forcing the leaky player to fold weak holdings. Additionally, frequent light 3-bets inflate the pot out of position, putting the aggressor at a disadvantage when they miss the flop against a disciplined opponent.

Common Examples

How to Fix the Leak

  1. Range Construction: Ensure your 3-betting range is balanced and appropriate for the opponent. Against tight players, tighten your value range and reduce bluffs; against loose players, widen your value range and avoid marginal bluffs.
  2. Sizing and Position: Use larger 3-bet sizes out of position to discourage calls, and smaller sizes in position to control pot size. Avoid light 3-bets from the blinds unless you have a significant post-flop edge.
  3. Exploitability Awareness: Pay attention to how opponents react. If they begin 4-betting more often or flatting with strong hands, reduce your light 3-bet frequency.
  4. Hand Selection: Choose bluffing hands with good playability (e.g., suited connectors, suited aces with blockers) rather than random weak hands. Avoid hands like K8o or J9o that have poor post-flop potential.

A light 3-bet leak is a common but correctable flaw. By adjusting your 3-betting range to the opponent and situation, you can plug this leak and improve your win rate.
