Light Donk Bet Defense

Light Donk Bet Defense

Term: Light Donk Bet Defense Defensive strategy against an opponent who makes a light donk bet (out of position bet on the flop with a weak range).

Concept

Donk Bet refers to a player out of position (e.g., early position) actively betting on the flop, breaking the pattern where the pre-flop aggressor typically makes a continuation bet. Light Donk Bet emphasizes a weaker betting range, potentially including marginal hands or draws, often with the goal of protecting equity or semi-bluffing.

Defense Approach

Facing a Light Donk Bet, the core of defense is to assess the opponent's range and leverage positional advantage. Common options:

  • Raise: When your hand is stronger than the opponent's range or has good playability, raising can force the opponent to fold or build the pot.
  • Call: If your hand has showdown value or drawing potential, call to see how future streets develop.
  • Fold: When your hand is very weak with no potential, avoid unnecessary investment.

Notes

Light Donk Bet itself is uncommon; defense should consider opponent tendencies and board structure. Overly frequent defense can be exploited.
