Linear 3-Bet
Linear 3-Bet
In practice, this strategy is often used against opponents who fold frequently or in the blinds, aiming to take down the pot immediately with strong hands while avoiding trouble if re-raised. Typical scenario: You are on the button and make a linear 3-bet with AJo against a CO open. If the opponent folds, you take the pot directly. If the opponent 4-bets, your hand strength is sufficient to comfortably call or re-raise, without worrying about losses from being caught bluffing.
Overview
Linear 3-Bet is a preflop strategy in Texas Hold'em where a player uses only value hands and medium-strength hands in their 3-betting range, without any bluffing hands. This strategy contrasts with Polarized 3-Bet, which splits the range into strong value hands and pure bluffs.
Strategy Characteristics
The range for a Linear 3-Bet typically consists of the following hand types:
- Strong value hands: Such as AA, KK, QQ, AK, etc., which usually have a significant postflop advantage.
- Medium-strength hands: Such as AJ, KQ, medium pocket pairs (e.g., 88, 99), etc., which have some playability postflop but are not strong enough to be value hands in a polarized range.
The core idea of Linear 3-Bet is to avoid weak hands or pure bluffs, thereby reducing the risk of getting into trouble when facing a 4-Bet or a call from an opponent. This strategy is particularly effective when opponents rarely 4-bet bluff or have a tight calling range.
Applicable Scenarios
- Opponent has a tight range: When the opponent's raising range is tight and they have a high fold frequency to 3-bets, a Linear 3-Bet can force them to fold medium-strength hands while preserving your own value hands.
- Deep stacked: In deep-stacked situations, a Linear 3-Bet can avoid getting involved in large pots with weak hands from a disadvantaged position.
- Against aggressive players: If an opponent frequently 4-bet bluffs, a Linear 3-Bet reduces the risk of being bluffed because your range contains more strong hands.
Comparison with Polarized 3-Bet
- Polarized 3-Bet: The range includes strong value hands (e.g., AA, KK) and pure bluffs (e.g., A2s, low pocket pairs), while medium-strength hands are called. This strategy aims to balance the range and make it difficult for opponents to read.
- Linear 3-Bet: The range leans more toward value, with medium-strength hands also used for 3-betting, thus reducing the bluffing component. This strategy is simpler and more straightforward but can be exploited by opponents.
Considerations
Linear 3-Bet is not optimal in every situation. Against high-level opponents, a range that is too linear can be exploited. For example, an opponent may call your 3-bet with a wider range and realize their equity postflop. Therefore, players should adjust their strategy based on opponent tendencies and game dynamics.
