MP 4-Bet Pot Preflop Strategy

MP 4-Bet Pot Preflop Strategy

A strategic framework for playing from the Middle Position (MP) when facing a 4-bet preflop, focusing on range construction, pot odds, and stack depth considerations.

Concept Overview

MP 4-bet pot preflop strategy refers to the decisions a player in the Middle Position (MP) makes when there has been an initial raise, a 3-bet, and then a 4-bet before the action reaches them. The MP position is generally considered a middle to early position, sitting to the immediate left of the under-the-gun (UTG) position, often covering seats 3 to 5 in a 9-handed game. This strategy is crucial because MP faces a polarized or merged 4-betting range from opponents, and the player must decide whether to call, fold, or 5-bet jam, factoring in position, stack sizes, and opponent tendencies.

Key Factors

1. Stack Depth

The most critical variable is effective stack size. In deep-stacked games (100+ big blinds), calling a 4-bet is more viable as implied odds are higher. With 100bb stacks, typical 4-bet sizes range from 19-24bb, leaving enough depth for post-flop play. With shorter stacks (under 40bb), 5-bet jamming or folding becomes the primary options.

2. Range Construction

MP's initial raising range should be relatively tight (e.g., 77+, ATs+, AJo+, KJs+, QJs, suited connectors like T9s). Against a 3-bet, MP's 4-bet range often includes value hands (QQ+, AK) and some bluffs (A5s, KQs). When facing a 4-bet from an opponent, MP's continuing range depends on opponent's 4-bet range: if opponent 4-bets linearly (e.g., TT+, AQ+), MP can call with hands that have good playability (suited connectors, small pairs) or 5-bet jam with premiums (KK+). If opponent 4-bets a polarized range (value: QQ+, AK; bluffs: Axs, Kxs), MP should tighten up and mostly 5-bet jam or fold.

3. Position and Pot Odds

MP is out of position relative to the 3-bettor if the 3-bet came from later positions (CO, BTN, blinds). In a 4-bet pot, MP will often be out of position post-flop, making calling less attractive. The pot odds offered by a 4-bet are typically around 2.5:1 to 3:1, meaning MP needs about 25-30% equity against the opponent's range to call profitably. However, reverse implied odds reduce the value of marginal hands.

4. Opponent Tendencies

Against aggressive opponents who 4-bet wide, MP can call more liberally with suited connectors and medium pairs, planning to bluff-catch or semi-bluff post-flop. Against tight opponents, MP should fold all but the strongest hands (KK+, AKs) and 5-bet jam with AA.

Sample Strategy (100bb Effective)

  • Facing a 4-bet from UTG or EP: Fold most hands except KK+. Call with AA? Usually jam to avoid tough post-flop.
  • Facing a 4-bet from CO/BTN: Call with hands like AJs, KQs, TT, 99 (if opponent is aggressive). Jam with QQ+, AK.
  • Facing a 4-bet from blinds: Tighten calling range due to positional disadvantage; jam with QQ+, AK, fold lower pairs.

Summary

MP 4-bet pot preflop strategy balances pot odds, equity realization, and positional disadvantage. A disciplined approach involves folding marginal hands, jamming with premiums, and occasionally flatting with hands that flop well when stack depths and opponent tendencies permit.
