MP 4Bet
MP 4Bet
Term: Middle Position 4Bet MP 4Bet Pre-flop, the fourth raise made from the middle position MP, which is a re-raise of a 3-bet.
Position and Concept
MP 4Bet means a player in middle position (MP) makes the fourth raise preflop. In Texas Hold'em, the betting rounds typically start with an open raise as the first raise, then someone re-raises (3Bet), and then a re-raise of the 3Bet is a 4Bet. The MP position generally refers to the two seats after UTG and before the button (BTN) in a six-handed table, though it may vary by table structure.
Strategy Considerations
Making an MP 4Bet usually indicates holding a strong hand, such as AA, KK, QQ, AK, and some very strong combos. The goal is to build the pot preflop while forcing opponents to fold or enter an unfavorable situation. Since the MP position is relatively early, players should consider the reactions of later players when 4Betting, especially those behind like CO, BTN who may have wider ranges. If the opponent is aggressive, an MP 4Bet can suppress their blind-stealing attempts; if the opponent is tight-passive, it can isolate and extract value.
Range and Adjustments
A typical MP 4Bet range includes value hands: AA, KK, QQ, AKs, and a few semi-bluff hands like A5s, K6s, etc., but selection must be careful. Against different opponent styles, adjust the range: reduce semi-bluffs against tight players, increase them against loose players. IP (in position) can 4Bet wider, while OOP (out of position) should focus on value hands.
Example
Assume a six-handed table. The MP player open raises to 3BB, the CO player 3Bets to 10BB, and the MP player chooses to 4Bet to 25BB. Here, the MP's 4Bet indicates he has a strong hand, intending to win immediately or take control postflop.
Notes
- Frequency should not be too high, otherwise you risk being countered by opponents.
- Consider effective stack depth; with deep stacks, the 4Bet size can be slightly larger.
- If opponents frequently fold to 4Bets, you can widen your semi-bluff range accordingly.
