Note Taking
Note Taking
Note Taking Refers to the behavior of a player recording opponent's actions, tendencies, or key hand information during a poker hand to assist in subsequent decision-making.
Overview
Note taking is an important auxiliary skill in Texas Hold'em, especially useful for multi-table online games. Players record opponents' action patterns in specific situations (e.g., preflop raising range, postflop c-bet frequency, reaction to raises, etc.) via text notes, compensating for memory limitations and making more accurate hand reading and decisions in subsequent sessions.
Main Uses
- Identify Leaks: Record opponents who fold too often preflop, have abnormal bluffing frequencies postflop, and adjust strategies accordingly.
- Distinguish Player Types: Such as loose-aggressive (LAG), tight-aggressive (TAG), calling station, etc., and note their positional preferences.
- Key Hand Review: Record the full process of a hand (e.g., hole cards, actions, showdown results) for post-session analysis or real-time reminders.
- Adapt to Dynamic Opponents: Some players temporarily change their style; notes help capture short-term tendencies.
Examples of Note Content
- Preflop tendency: "@SB, vs CO raise 3bet rate only 4%, high fold percentage."
- Postflop tendency: "Turn check-raise range overly polarized, high bluff proportion."
- Special behavior: "Instant call on river overbet, likely nuts."
- Opponent adjustment: "Becomes passive after being re-raised, gives up stealing."
Considerations
- Notes should be concise and objective, avoiding subjective emotional descriptions.
- Regularly purge outdated notes as player tendencies may change.
- Notes have limited effectiveness for low stakes or recreational players; higher value against high-stakes regulars (Regulars).
Tools and Platforms
Most online poker clients (e.g., PokerStars, GG Poker) have built-in note-taking features that allow tagging by player name. Third-party HUD software (e.g., Hold'em Manager, PokerTracker) allows direct note addition linked to statistics.
