A Position Change refers to a player moving from one seat to another at a poker table, thereby changing their order of action relative to the dealer button. This is a deliberate move to gain a more favorable position, such as late position (close to the button) which allows more information before acting, or to avoid a bad seat relative to aggressive opponents.

Strategic Considerations

Position is a fundamental advantage in poker because acting later in a round provides information about opponents' actions. A player might request a position change after a hand if permitted by house rules, especially if they feel disadvantaged by their current seat (e.g., sitting to the immediate left of an aggressive player who frequently raises, forcing them to act first post-flop). However, frequent position changes can be seen as disruptive and are often restricted in live games.

In live poker rooms, position changes are typically subject to specific rules:

• No jumping seats between hands: Most casinos require players to remain in their seat until a hand concludes, and only then may they request a change.

• Tournament considerations: In tournaments, seat changes are rare and often only allowed when a player is moved to balance tables (via a table change), not at will.
