干燥牌面河牌持续下注(River C-Bet on Dry Board)

On the river with a dry low connectivity board, the flop raiser's strategy of continuation betting is usually to extract value or deny opponent's draws.

Concept

A Dry Board refers to a board structure that is simple with low drawing potential, such as a rainbow board with no straight draws (e.g., K♠ 7♦ 2♣). The River is the final betting round, where players have all seven cards (two hole cards plus five community cards).

Strategy Principle

When the flop raiser (typically the preflop aggressor) has already c-bet on a dry flop, and the turn does not change the board texture, continuing to bet on the river (i.e., River C-Bet) is usually based on the following considerations:

  • Value Bet: If the flop bettor holds a strong hand (e.g., top pair top kicker or better), the dry board makes it difficult for opponents to outdraw on the river. Thus, betting extracts value from weaker made hands (e.g., second pair).
  • Denying Draws: Although draws are scarce on dry boards, opponents may hold backdoor draws or marginal hands. A river bet forces them to fold, avoiding being outdrawn in a free showdown.
  • Polarizing Range: For aggressive players with a wide flop range, a river c-bet on a dry board can easily be perceived as a bluff. Therefore, it's necessary to balance value bets and bluffs, often using medium-strength hands (e.g., top pair weak kicker) for thin value and air hands for bluffs.

Precautions

A river c-bet on a dry board should not be a default strategy; consider:

  • Opponent Type: Tight-passive players are more likely to fold, suitable for bluffing; calling stations tend to pay off value bets.
  • Own Range: If your flop betting range contains too high a proportion of air, your river c-bet may be exploitable.
  • Board Blockers: For example, holding top pair has blocking effects, reducing opponent's top pair combos and increasing bluff success rate.

Typical Example

Suppose the board is K♠ 7♦ 2♣ 5♦ A♥. The flop raiser continues betting on the river after the A♥ hits. If they hold A♠K♣ (top two pair), it's a value bet; if they hold J♥T♥ (pure air), it's a bluff.
