This type of hand is typically very low probability, thus involving a significant element of luck.
Typical Scenario
For example, a player holds A♥K♥ and the flop comes 8♠9♦2♣. At this point, the player only has high cards with no made hand. The turn brings 10♥, giving the player a backdoor flush draw and a gutshot straight draw (needing a J or Q to complete the straight). The river shows J♥, completing both a flush and a straight (A-10 straight), allowing the player to overtake the opponent.
Probability and Strategy
The probability of making a Runner-Runner hand is typically very low. For example, a backdoor flush draw has only about a 4% chance of hitting consecutive flush cards on the turn and river; similarly for backdoor straight draws. Therefore, on the flop, players should generally not invest large amounts of chips solely based on backdoor draws, unless the pot odds are extremely favorable or the opponent's fold equity is high.
