SB 75bb Resteal

SB 75bb Resteal

Term: SB 75bb Resteal Explanation: The player in the small blind, with effective stacks of about 75 big blinds, re-raises against an opponent's steal raise to either take down the pot or force a fold.

Concept

Resteal refers to a player in the blinds or out of position re-raising a suspected steal raise to regain control of the pot and exploit an opponent's overly wide steal range. When the effective stack depth is around 75 big blinds (bb), Restealing from the small blind involves special considerations.

Applicable Scenarios

  • Opponent Range Assessment: Typically assume the opponent on the button (BTN) or cutoff (CO) is stealing with a wide range, e.g., about 40%-50% of starting hands. The small blind player can consider a Resteal with hands of medium strength or better (e.g., AT+, 77+, KQ+).
  • Stack Depth Impact: 75bb is a medium-deep stack, requiring stronger hands or accurate reads on opponent tendencies, as opponents are more likely to call or re-raise. With shallow stacks (e.g., 20bb), Resteals often involve all-ins; at 75bb, a raise of 3-4 times the blind is typical.
  • Positional Disadvantage: The small blind is in the worst postflop position (disadvantaged against any position). Therefore, if the opponent calls a Resteal, careful play in postflop aggression and defense is required.

Key Strategy Points

  1. Raise Size: Usually raise to 3-4.5 times the opponent's initial raise. For example, if the opponent opens to 2.5bb, the small blind can raise to 8-11bb.
  2. Balanced Range: To avoid exploitation, the Resteal range should include both value hands (e.g., TT+, AQ+) and some bluffs (e.g., A5s, K9s). Pure bluffs at 75bb depth require caution due to attractive calling odds.
  3. Opponent Tendencies: If the opponent often folds, expand the Resteal range; if the opponent frequently 4-bets or calls tricky, tighten up.
  4. Postflop Plan: After a Resteal, the pot is large. The small blind should be prepared to c-bet at a high frequency on the flop to force the opponent to fold marginal hands.

Notes

  • When stack depth deviates from 75bb (e.g., >100bb or <40bb), strategy adjustments are needed. Deeper stacks make Resteals more likely to create large pots, requiring stronger hands; shallower stacks may allow direct all-ins.
  • Avoid confusion with over-defending the small blind: Resteal is an aggressive re-raise, while defend refers to calling to protect the blind.
  • Example: Effective stack 75bb, BTN opens to 2.5bb, small blind holds AJo. Consider raising to 9bb. If BTN calls, c-bet about half the pot on the flop.
