Set

暗三条

Context: Poker term: Set (暗三条) A set (暗三条) refers to a player making three of a kind on the flop using one of their pocket cards and a matching card on the board. In practice, a set is a strong, well‑hidden hand because opponents cannot easily deduce your hand strength from the board texture, often luring players holding top pair or overpairs to commit large amounts of chips. For example, if you hold pocket 8s and the flop comes K‑8‑2, you have flopped a set of 8s. If an opponent holds top pair with a king, you can bet or raise to build the pot and extract significant value on later streets.

Overview

A Set (暗三条) is a very strong hand in Texas Hold'em, formed when a player uses a pocket pair and a third card of the same rank appears on the board. For example, if a player holds 8♠8♥ and the flop comes 8♦K♣2♠, the player has made a Set.

Difference from Trips

A Set differs from Trips (明三条): a Set uses a pocket pair, while Trips are formed when a player uses one hole card and a pair already on the board. For example, if the board is A♠A♥K♦ and the player holds A♣Q♠, that is Trips. Sets are more concealed because opponents find it harder to detect from the board texture.

Value and Strategy

A Set is one of the strongest made hands on the flop, typically beating top pair, two pair, and even flush draws. The probability of flopping a Set is about 12%, so players often call raises preflop with small to medium pocket pairs (e.g., 22-99) hoping to flop a Set. Once hit, players can often win a large pot because opponents may pay off with top pair or draws.

Considerations

  • Sets are not invincible: when the board shows straight or flush possibilities, a Set can still be outdrawn.
  • Slow play vs. fast play: depending on board texture, players may choose to slow play (Check-Raise) or fast play (Bet) to maximize value.
  • Implied Odds: when chasing a Set with small pocket pairs, ensure sufficient implied odds — i.e., the ability to win enough chips from opponents when you hit to compensate for the times you miss.
