Show One Show All
Show One Show All
Term: Show One Show All During the showdown phase, if a player voluntarily reveals one of their hole cards, they must show all their hole cards, and other players are entitled to see all of that player's unrevealed cards.
Overview
"Show One Show All" is a common rule in poker, especially in Texas Hold'em. This rule states that during the showdown phase, if a player chooses to show one hole card to some or all opponents, they must reveal their entire hand. Additionally, other players (including those not in the hand) have the right to request to see the player's full hand.
Purpose
The rule is designed to prevent players from selectively revealing information to gain an unfair advantage. For example, a player might show only a strong card to mislead opponents while hiding a weaker one. By forcing the full hand to be exposed, the rule ensures information symmetry and fair play.
Applicable Scenarios
- At showdown: When all betting is complete and the showdown begins, players must show their hands to compare. If a player shows one card first, they must show the other.
- Non-showdown: If a player voluntarily shows a single card before showdown (e.g., after an opponent folds), this rule also applies, and other players can request to see the full hand.
Exceptions
Some poker rooms or online platforms may allow a player to show only one card in specific situations, such as heads-up with the opponent having already folded. However, most regulated establishments strictly enforce "Show One Show All."
Strategic Implications
Players should avoid prematurely showing a card when they are not certain of winning, because once one card is exposed, opponents get to see the entire hand, revealing valuable information. After a successful bluff, it is generally not advisable to show cards, as doing so may expose one's strategy.
