Six Four Suited

six-four suited

Overview

Six-four suited (often abbreviated as 64s) is a type of marginal suited connector in Texas Hold'em. Unlike suited connectors (e.g., 65s, 54s), it has a gap in rank, making it a suited gapper. Although the card ranks are low, the suited attribute gives it some drawing potential, and it can be used for preflop raises or calls in specific situations.

Game Value

  • Flush potential: The suited nature offsets some of the rank disadvantage, especially in multiway pots. If you hit a flush draw or backdoor flush, it can offer significant implied odds.
  • Straight potential: It can make various straight draws. For example, on a flop of 5-7-8, 64s gives you an open-ended straight draw; on a flop of 5-7-X, it gives you a gutshot straight draw. However, compared to connectors (e.g., 65s), it has fewer ways to complete a straight.
  • Postflop playability: Overall playability is moderate. If you don't hit a strong draw on the flop, it is usually not advisable to continue investing chips.

Typical Strategy

  • Preflop: In unraised pots, it can be considered for limping or raising from middle to late position or the blinds, but it is not suitable for opening from early position. Facing a raise, generally only call when in position and with deep effective stacks (around 100BB or more).
  • Postflop: When you hit top pair or a draw, you should actively bet or raise; otherwise, mostly stick to check-fold. As a semi-bluff hand, you can bet on appropriate board textures considering opponent fold equity.

Comparison with Other Hand Types

  • Suited connectors (e.g., 65s): Stronger straight-making ability, easier to enter pots preflop.
  • Suited gappers (e.g., 64s, Q9s): Overall value is lower than suited connectors, but on some flops they can form disguised strong hands (e.g., gutshot).

Notes

  • Six-four suited is easily dominated in multiway pots and should not be played too frequently.
  • Compared to unsuited 64, the suited attribute significantly increases its value, but it is still a marginal starting hand and should be played cautiously based on opponent tendencies and position.
