Soul Crush is a psychological victory in Texas Hold'em, usually occurring on the river. By accurately reading the opponent's hand strength and making an oversized bet that contradicts the board texture, the player forces the opponent to believe their range is extremely strong, causing them to fold a previously leading hand. This process not only wins the pot but also deals a heavy psychological blow to the opponent, making them fearful or doubtful in similar situations going forward.

Typical Scenarios

• River bomb: The board shows obvious straight or flush possibilities, but the player actually missed, yet bets several times the pot. The opponent holds medium-strength hands (e.g., top pair) but cannot withstand the pressure and folds.
• Turn check-raise: The opponent bets on the turn, and the player checks and then raises to a huge amount, implying a nutted hand, forcing the opponent to give up draws or thin value bets.

Psychological Impact

After a successful Soul Crush, the opponent may experience:

• Self-doubt: They start questioning their hand-reading ability, believing their mid-strength hands are always dominated by super-strong holdings.
• Tilt: Anger or frustration from being bluffed leads to aggressive or passive subsequent decisions, often chasing losses.
• Range distortion: In similar spots, they begin to overfold, leaving exploitable opportunities for the player.
