Concept

Squeeze from BB is a common preflop aggressive play where a player in the Big Blind (BB) position, facing one or more limp-callers, makes a large raise (typically 3-4 times the pot) in an attempt to force all opponents to fold, winning the pot outright.

Principle

Since the Big Blind is already the last forced bet and chips have been committed, the cost of the squeeze raise is relatively low. When multiple players limp, their ranges are usually weak and they often struggle to resist a large raise. By squeezing, you can deny them the chance to see a flop and leverage your positional advantage in later streets.

Execution Points

• Opponent ranges: Limping players typically hold medium-strength hands (e.g., small pairs, suited connectors) or attempt to see a cheap flop. A large raise can effectively force them to fold.
• Stack depth: The squeeze works better with deeper effective stacks, as callers face larger future investments. Be cautious with short stacks, as they may call with lighter ranges.
• Raise size: Usually raise to 3-4 times the initial pot (including the Big Blind and all limps). For example, blinds 100/200, 3 limpers (total 800), BB can raise to 2400-3200.
• Frequency: Should not be overused, or opponents will adjust by limping with strong hands to trap. Mix value hands (e.g., big pairs) and bluffs (e.g., Ax) to balance your range.

Risks

• If an opponent re-squeezes (Re-Squeeze), you may need to fold or enter a large pot, potentially losing big.
• Against loose-passive players who frequently limp, your squeeze may be called often, leaving you out of position postflop.

Example

Assume blinds 500/1000. You are in the Big Blind with A♣3♣. Three players limp (each 1000), pot now 4500. You raise to 15000. If all players fold, you win the pot. If someone calls, you must proceed cautiously postflop.
