Ten Four Offsuit

Term: T4 Offsuit Ten Four Offsuit Refers to a starting hand consisting of a 10 and a 4 of different suits, generally considered a very weak trash hand.

Ten Four Offsuit

Basic Meaning

Ten Four Offsuit (T4o) is a specific starting hand combination in Texas Hold'em, consisting of a Ten and a Four of different suits. In Hold'em, starting hands are typically described by their ranks plus "suited" or "offsuit" (or "rainbow"). Ten Four Offsuit is abbreviated as T4o.

Hand Strength Evaluation

Ten Four Offsuit falls into the extremely weak category among all starting hands in Texas Hold'em. From a strength standpoint, the distance between Ten and Four is large, and it cannot form a flush draw. It lacks both the straight potential of connectors (e.g., J-T, T-9) and the added value of suited hands. In 6-max or full-ring games, T4o is typically classified as a starting hand that should almost always be folded.

Typical Strategy

Preflop: Generally, without any positional advantage, Ten Four Offsuit should be folded directly. Even in the blinds (e.g., the big blind) facing a small raise, it is usually not advisable to defend, as its playability is extremely low. Only in rare situations, such as when facing a very small raise from the blind with a wide opponent range, might a call be considered, but in the long run this is -EV (negative expected value).

Postflop: If you somehow enter the flop, T4o must hit top pair, two pair, or a stronger hand to be of value. Due to the large gap between the ranks, it is difficult to make a straight (the only possible straights would be 5-6-7-8-9 or 9-8-7-6-5, but the T4 combination itself can hardly form a straight draw directly), and without flush potential and with very low pair probability, the chances of hitting the flop are slim.

Common Misconceptions

Some novice players may think that holding a Ten makes the hand not too weak, but in reality T4o has no advantage in most scenarios. In Hold'em, the value of a starting hand is primarily determined by connectivity, suitedness, and rank gap; T4o scores poorly on all three fronts.

Cultural Trivia

In some poker communities, T4o is sometimes referred to as "Daniels" (though Doyle Brunson's nickname has a similar joke, it's not the same concept) — in fact, the most famous trash hand is 7-2 offsuit (or suited), and T4o is just one of many garbage hands. It is occasionally jokingly called "T4 off," meaning "Ten with a kicker of 4," highlighting its extreme weakness.
