UTG+1 Fold to 4-Bet

UTG+1 Fold to 4-Bet

UTG+1 Fold to 4-Bet The frequency with which a player in the UTG+1 position chooses to fold when facing a 4-bet preflop.

Overview

[UTG+1] [Fold to 4-Bet] is a poker statistic specific to the UTG+1 position. It measures how often a player folds after opening preflop, facing a [3-Bet], then re-raising (4-Bet), and subsequently encountering another raise (5-Bet). This metric is typically calculated by [HUD] ([Heads-Up Display]) software, and its reliability increases with a larger [sample size].

Calculation

The formula is: Number of times [UTG+1](/term/utg-1) folds to a [4-Bet](/term/4-bet) / Total number of times [UTG](/term/utg)+1 faces a 4-[Bet](/term/bet). "Faces a [4-Bet]" refers to a scenario where the UTG+1 player opens, another player [3-Bets], UTG+1 makes a 4-Bet (usually a re-raise or all-in), and then the opponent raises again (all-in or a large [5-Bet]); at this point, UTG+1 folds. Note: If UTG+1 simply calls the 3-Bet without 4-Betting, that hand is not counted in this statistic.

Typical Ranges and Interpretation

  • Low fold rate (e.g., below 20%): Indicates the player rarely folds after 4-Betting, typically holding strong hands (e.g., [AA], [KK], AK) or tends to be aggressive and continue against further action.
  • Medium fold rate (20%-40%): A balanced range that includes both value hands and bluffs, typical of a tight-aggressive player.
  • High fold rate (above 40%): Suggests the player frequently folds to a 5-Bet, implying their 4-Bet range is wide and includes many bluffs (e.g., small pairs, suited connectors), or they over-respect the opponent's 5-Bet range.

Influencing Factors

  • Opponent tendencies: If the opponent's 5-Bet range is tight (only [AA], [KK]), UTG+1 may fold more often; if the 5-Bet range is loose, the fold rate may decrease.
  • [Stack depth]: In [deep stack] situations, players are more likely to 4-Bet with medium-strength hands and call a 5-Bet; in [shallow stack] situations, the fold rate increases.
  • Position: UTG+1 is in a relatively disadvantageous position (one spot after the gun), so their 4-Bet range tends to be tighter, and the fold rate may be higher.
  • Tournament stage: Near the money bubble or under heavy [ICM pressure], the fold rate rises significantly.

Application Strategies

  • Exploitative strategy: If you notice an opponent has a very high [fold to 4-Bet] rate in UTG+1, you can frequently 3-Bet or 5-Bet bluff them to force folds.
  • Defensive strategy: As the UTG+1 player, if you find your own fold rate is too high, adjust your range by reducing bluff 4-Bets, increasing the proportion of value hands, or calling 3-Bets more often to lower costs.

This statistic should be interpreted in conjunction with other data (e.g., [VPIP], [PFR], 3-Bet frequency) to avoid misjudgment from a single metric.
