UTG+1 on Rainbow Turn
UTG+1 on Rainbow Turn
Term: UTG+1 on Rainbow Turn
Position Meaning
UTG+1 (Under the Gun +1) is the second position after the under-the-gun position (UTG) preflop, belonging to early position. Players in this position typically only play strong hands preflop and are at a disadvantage postflop because there are still multiple players yet to act behind.
Rainbow Flop and Turn
A rainbow flop (Rainbow Flop) means the three flop cards are all of different suits, indicating no flush draw is possible. When the turn card is dealt, if the turn card is of a different suit from all three flop cards, the board remains rainbow and a flush is still impossible. If the turn card matches the suit of one of the flop cards, a flush draw becomes possible. This term specifically refers to the situation where the turn keeps the board rainbow, i.e., the four community cards consist of either four different suits or three suits with no two of the same suit.
Strategic Tendencies
When facing a rainbow turn from the UTG+1 position, the lack of a flush draw reduces the number of suited combos in opponents’ ranges. Therefore, bets and raises lean toward either value hands or pure bluffs. Players must carefully consider the strength of their own made hands: top pair top kicker or overpairs can continue betting for protection; while straight draws (e.g., open-ended straight draws) may choose to bet as a semi-bluff or check, depending on table dynamics. In multi-way pots, a rainbow board lowers opponents’ drawing equity, but the positional disadvantage still requires cautious play.
Example
Preflop, UTG+1 raises with AK. The flop comes K♠ 9♦ 3♣ (rainbow). The turn is 7♥ (still rainbow). The player now has top pair top kicker and can consider betting for value. If the turn were 7♠, a flush draw would become possible, requiring a reassessment.
