UTG Preflop Heads-Up Pot

枪口位翻前单挑底池

**UTG Preflop Heads-Up Pot** Refers to a heads-up pot scenario where the player in the UTG (under the gun) position enters the pot preflop against only one opponent (typically the blind position or a caller).

Context: Poker term article: UTG Preflop Heads-Up Pot

Position and Situation

UTG (Under the Gun) is the first to act preflop, located to the left of the big blind. When the UTG player raises and only one player (e.g., the big blind defends or a late position calls) enters the pot, it forms a "UTG Preflop Heads-Up Pot".

Strategic Characteristics

  • Hand Range Adjustment: Due to many players yet to act, UTG typically raises with a tight range (e.g., top 12%-16% of hands). However, once the pot becomes heads-up, the opponent's calling range is often weaker (e.g., the big blind defends with a wide range), so the UTG player can loosen their continuation bet frequency and hand strength requirements postflop.
  • Position Advantage: Even though UTG lacks position preflop (and usually remains at a disadvantage in a heads-up pot, unless the opponent is the small blind and UTG raises, the small blind folds, and the big blind calls, making UTG's position even worse), UTG, as the aggressor, often applies pressure through continuation bets postflop.
  • Board Structure: On dry boards (e.g., K-7-2 rainbow), UTG's range includes many high cards and overpairs, allowing for high-frequency continuation bets. On wet boards (e.g., 9-8-7 suited), caution is needed to avoid being outdrawn by opponent's draws or made hands.

Typical Example

Assume blinds are 100/200. UTG raises to 500, only the big blind calls. The pot is 1100 postflop. UTG can decide whether to continuation bet based on their hand and the board texture. For instance, with A♠A♥, they almost always bet. With K♦Q♠ on a 9♣6♦2♥ flop, they typically bet as well, since the opponent's range mostly consists of weaker hands.
