UTG Squeeze
UTG Squeeze
Term: UTG Squeeze In pre-flop, after the UTG player raises, another player calls or re-raises, and then a third player makes a large re-raise, attempting to force the first two players to fold.
Concept
UTG Squeeze is an aggressive preflop strategy typically executed by a late-position player against an UTG raiser and one or more middle-position callers or re-raisers. Its core idea is to leverage positional advantage and table dynamics by making a large 3-bet or 4-bet to force opponents to fold, thereby winning the dead money in the pot directly.
Typical Scenario
- UTG player raises: The UTG (under the gun) player usually has a tight range, such as high pairs, big high cards, or medium pairs.
- Middle players call or re-raise: One or more players call (flat call) or make a small re-raise after UTG (often with weaker ranges).
- Late-position player squeezes: A player on the button or in the cutoff, observing that the preceding players' ranges are relatively wide or weak, uses position and table image to make an oversized re-raise (e.g., raising to 3–4 times the UTG raise).
Strategic Purpose
- Exploit fold equity: UTG players often fold medium-strength hands facing a large re-raise, while middle players are even more inclined to fold.
- Capture dead money: After a successful squeeze, the pot includes UTG's raise and the middle players' calls, without needing to see a flop.
- Balance range: Skilled players mix strong hands (e.g., AA, KK) with bluffs (e.g., Ax, suited connectors) when squeezing, making it difficult for opponents to read.
Considerations
- Risk: UTG players holding strong hands (e.g., AA, KK) may 4-bet, putting the squeezer in a disadvantageous spot.
- Number of players: With multiple callers, the difficulty and risk of squeezing increase, as someone may be trapping with a strong hand.
- Frequency control: Overusing squeezes allows opponents to adjust by increasing 4-bet bluffs or calling ranges.
Difference from a Standard 3-bet
A standard 3-bet is usually a direct re-raise against a single raiser, whereas UTG Squeeze specifically refers to a larger re-raise from a late position when facing multiple opponents (at least one raiser plus one caller or re-raiser), with the aim of exploiting the weaker ranges of the middle players.
